What the Solenoid Actually Does
On a diesel generator the stop solenoid sits in the injection pump’s fuel rack or bypass line. Two wiring styles exist and they fail differently:
- Normally-open (pull-to-run): energised at crank, the solenoid lifts and holds the fuel path open. Engine dies the moment power is lost. Failed closed → crank-but-no-start.
- Normally-closed (pull-to-stop): power on the key stops the engine by pulling the rack to the shut-off position. Failed solenoid → engine runs only while you hold the starter, or refuses to stop (run-on).
Identify which style your pump uses before testing — it changes what a “good” result looks like.
Test 1 — The 12 V/24 V Bump Test (30 seconds)
- Remove the solenoid from the pump (mark link positions first).
- Connect the body to battery negative with a flying lead.
- Touch battery positive to the solenoid terminal.
A healthy pull-type unit clunks audibly and the plunger snaps up and holds. A push-type unit snaps down. No click = coil open or mechanically jammed. Click but weak travel = internal binding; replace.
Use the voltage marked on the solenoid cap (12 V and 24 V coils are not interchangeable — a 24 V coil on 12 V clicks weakly and can stick half-open, which is exactly the “starts then dies when the key is released” symptom).
Test 2 — Coil Resistance
Set the meter to ohms and measure terminal to body/ground:

| Near zero to ground | Shorted turn — replace |
Then check the supply side: with the harness disconnected, probe for full battery voltage at the connector while cranking. No voltage at the solenoid means the fault is upstream — kill switch, starter-motor “R” terminal, wiring chafe, or a control module not sending the run signal. That’s the difference between replacing a small part and chasing the wrong one.
Test 3 — Mechanical Condition
Diesel left standing can gum the plunger with varnish; water ingress seizes the body. Work the plunger by hand — it should move freely and spring back crisply. Clean and free a sticky plunger; if the rod or linkage is worn enough to not fully pull the rack, replace the solenoid rather than chasing a lean-run fault later.
Matching a Replacement
Order by the injection-pump or engine part number stamped on the old solenoid, not by engine model alone — pumps get swapped over a machine’s life. Confirm three details: voltage (12/24), function (normally open vs normally closed), and mounting (thread size, flange, rod length).
