Generator AVR Wiring and Sensing Guide: Shunt vs Auxiliary vs PMG Topologies

October 27, 2026

Wiring an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) correctly depends on understanding whether your alternator uses self-excited shunt power (SX460), separate auxiliary sensing (AS440), or isolated 3-phase PMG excitation (MX321). This guide provides exact terminal designations from verified technical manuals, step-by-step bench testing procedures, and troubleshooting workflows.

Replacing a Stamford SX460 with an AS440: What Changes on the Bench

October 8, 2026

An SX460-to-AS440 swap is not a drop-in on paper. Both are half-wave phase-controlled thyristor regulators with the same ±1.0 % load regulation, but the AS440 shifts the sensing floor, halves thermal drift, adds droop CT and analogue inputs, and carries derating rules the SX460 sheet never mentions.
